Many companies make the mistake of assuming that engagement at work is something they can do on their own. This is simply not true. Engagement at work must be a result of a concerted effort by top management, staff and the board of directors. If all of these parties are committed to making a positive change then engagement at work will happen. The process of getting there may not be quick or easy but it will be well worth the effort. If you want to know how to improve employee engagement at work, you need to pay attention to two very important factors. The first thing to consider is vision. An effective workplace must have clear plans for improvement and clearly defined expectations. The second important thing to consider is understanding your employees. It is not good enough just to read the papers or watch the news; you need to get to know and understand the people who work for you. How you treat your people will reflect directly back at you as an employer. One of the best ways to ensure that employees feel engaged and have a positive impact on the work place is to provide them with opportunities to grow and develop. Performance reviews should not be set up to micromanage every aspect of the day. They should instead be used to help employees identify areas where they need some improvement. Recognition is a common way to get this done. Employees deserve some sort of credit for their efforts and it should always be given in good faith. To get started, consider asking each of your employees what they would like to see changes in terms of their performance. Employees want to know that they are making a difference and that their ideas and suggestions are being taken seriously. Employees like to believe that they are giving value and that their opinions matter. When this starts to happen you will see that engagement starts to rise. Encouraging your employees to be open and honest about how they feel, is also an effective way to improve engagement. An open dialogue about topics such as performance, expectations, feedback, conflict resolution, feedback and other key areas can help employees feel involved and positive about going forward. You never know when one of your employees might have a secret opinion that could bring the team together. The sooner an issue is brought to light the better. It will only take one constructive idea to resolve the tension. Another good strategy is to have regular 'brainstorming' meetings where employees can come and share their ideas. This is a great opportunity to gather information and brainstorm together. By doing so they will feel more like their thoughts and opinions are appreciated and can lead to them acting on them. Encouraging open communication is a very powerful way to improve the level of engagement in the workplace. A third way to improve performance and employee engagement is to provide opportunities for constructive criticism. Every member of the team needs to have the ability to say what they don't like about an assignment. They need to have the ability to make suggestions about ways to improve that aspect of the assignment. If the employee doesn't like something about the work, but you think it can be changed then encourage them to take action. There should always be the opportunity for employees to raise concerns or problems. Making your employees feel engaged at work is a great strategy for increasing productivity and company profitability. This is an important issue that can be resolved by following a few simple rules. Encourage communication, give opportunities for feedback, set up regular goals and motivate people. If you manage to combine these three strategies then you can create a productive and exciting workplace that will encourage engagement among your employees. Increasing engagement is not easy but with a bit of effort you can turn any workplace into an inspiring place to work.
